Interceptive (Early) Orthodontics
- Early treatment (usually from ages 7-10) can address developing issues before they become more complex.

Children’s Orthodontic FAQs
At what age should my child see an orthodontist?
We recommend an initial orthodontic assessment around the age of 7. This allows us to detect early signs of alignment or jaw issues and intervene when needed.
How do I know if my child needs braces?
Common signs include crowded teeth, bite issues (overbite, underbite), early or late loss of baby teeth, or thumb-sucking. A professional assessment is the best way to know.
What different types of fixed braces are available?
Fixed braces are ideal for more complex cases and offer predictable results. There are different options for fixed braces as the components can be made from different materials. As well as the standard metal braces, there are ceramic or tooth-coloured brackets which are much less noticeable, or Iconix champagne-gold coloured brackets for a stylish look. See our Fixed Braces page for more details.
Are braces painful for children?
There may be some discomfort after adjustments, but it’s usually mild and short-lived. Our team ensures your child’s comfort throughout the process.
How long will my child need to wear braces?
Treatment time varies, but most children wear braces for 12-24 months, depending on the complexity of their case.
Can my child still play sports or instruments with braces?
Yes! For sports, we recommend a mouthguard which we can provide. Most children quickly adapt to wind instruments with a little practice.
How much do children’s braces cost?
Costs vary depending on the type of treatment. We can offer flexible payment plans and clear, upfront pricing. During your consultation, we’ll explain all options.
Are NHS orthodontics available at IQ Braces & Faces?
We do offer NHS treatment to eligible children under 18 years of age. If your child is not eligible for NHS treatment, then we can offer your child private orthodontics. Some parents prefer to go private in any case, as they prefer if for quicker access (no waiting list), better appointment times and a wider range of treatment options, including Invisalign.
How do I maintain my child’s braces?
Good oral hygiene, regular check-ups, and avoiding sticky or hard foods are essential. We’ll provide full guidance on cleaning and caring for braces at the start and during the treatment. Please also see our handy page Looking After Braces for information.
