NHS orthodontic eligibility

Who is eligible for NHS orthodontic treatment?

NHS orthodontic treatment is available for children and teenagers who meet the clinical criteria set by the NHS called the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN).

Your child may be eligible if they have:

  • Significant crowding or bite problems affecting dental health
  • Impacted or missing teeth
  • Severe misalignment
  • Issues with biting, chewing or speech
  • Teeth at increased risk of trauma
  • Any moderate-severe orthodontic condition scored as IOTN 3.6 or above

If your child does not meet the NHS criteria, we offer a full range of affordable private treatment options – see our Children’s Orthodontics page.

What if my child is not eligible for NHS treatment?

If your child does not qualify for NHS braces, we offer flexible private treatment options including:

Finance for Private Treatment

We also offer 0% finance options and monthly payment plans to help spread the cost – visit our Finance page for more information.

What is included under the NHS?

NHS orthodontic treatment typically includes:

  • A full clinical assessment
  • X-rays and photographs if required
  • Metal fixed braces
  • All necessary adjustment appointments during treatment
  • Emergency appointments if needed
  • One set of retainers at the end of treatment
  • Follow-up appointments to help maintain the result

Cosmetic appliances such as Invisalign aligners, Iconix champagne brackets or Radiance clear brackets are not available under the NHS, but can be chosen on a private basis. Visit our individual treatment pages to find out more.

What to expect at an NHS assessment

We aim to make the process relaxed, friendly and easy to understand. During the NHS assessment our specialist orthodontist will:

  • Examine your child’s teeth and bite
  • Take any necessary X-rays, photographs or scans
  • Explain whether they qualify for NHS treatment
  • Discuss any suitable private treatment options if they are not eligible
  • Answer any questions you may have

NHS waiting times

NHS orthodontic services across England currently experience significant demand. Patients are placed on our waiting list in strict date order, and waiting times can vary depending on referral volume, NHS contract allocations, appointment availability and clinical urgency. We do our best to keep waiting times reasonable and to communicate clearly throughout.

NHS Treatment – Appointments & Attendance

To ensure treatment progresses smoothly, we ask all NHS patients to:

    • Attend appointments regularly and on time
    • Maintain excellent brushing and oral hygiene
    • Follow brace-care instructions
    • Wear elastics and retainers exactly as advised
    • Let us know as early as possible if they need to reschedule

Note: repeated missed or cancelled appointments, or failure to maintain oral hygiene, may lead to treatment being discontinued in line with NHS guidelines.
